If you are using an ACID-compliant database, which guarantees atomicity, then the race conditions can be avoided by implementing critical sections as atomic database queries.

Beware, however, of TOCTTOU bugs: any code not inside a database query will still be subject to race conditions.

You really do need to be careful of what guarantees your database provides! If implemented correctly, it is almost certainly better than using a lock.

Penguin is a filter designed to capture sites that are spamming Google's search results in ways that Google's regular spamming systems might not detect. Introduced in 2012, it has operated on a periodic basis.

The last Penguin update, Penguin 3.0, happened on October 17, 2014. Any sites hit by it have waited nearly two years for the chance to be free.

According to Google. With this latest release, Penguin becomes real-time. As Google recrawls and reindexes pages — which happens constantly — those pages will be assessed by the Penguin filter. Pages will be caught and/or freed by Penguin as part of this regular process.

As Google said in its post:
With this change, Penguin's data is refreshed in real time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after we recrawl and reindex a page.

Even with your files encrypted with FileVault, someone could grab your laptop, enter Recovery Mode and wipe your hard drive clean and start fresh. While this keeps your files from being stolen, it doesn't prevent others from happily using your Mac after a fresh install of OS X. A firmware password is a hardware-based encryption tool that requires a password when booting to Recovery Mode or from an external drive.

To create a firmware password, you will need to reboot your Mac and enter Recovery Mode by holding down Command-R when it begins to boot up. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, click on the Utilities menu in the menu bar and select Firmware Password Utility. Next, click Turn On Firmware Password, enter a password, and click the Set Password button. Finally, click Quit Firmware Password Utility, and choose Restart from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.

FileVault encrypts the data on your Mac so unauthorized users can't access your files. If you are using OS X Yosemite, then you are likely already using FileVault. When you installed Yosemite, one of the setup screens asked if you wanted to enable this utility. To check to see if you are using FileVault, open System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, and then click the FileVault tab. To enable FileVault, click the lock in the lower-left corner to unlock it and enter your admin name and password. Next, click the Turn On FileVault button. You'll get a recovery key, which you'll need if you want to reset your password. Be sure to keep this recovery key in a safe spot. Alternatively, you can store it with Apple. Apple includes a tool with Mac OS X to replace a Mac's password. This is the best option if you have completely forgotten your password. Follow these steps:

Turn off your Mac (choose Apple > Shut Down).Press the power button while holding down Command-R. The Mac will boot into Recovery mode. When you see the load bar appear you can let go of the keys. By default, the PAM module does not echo the verification code when it is entered by the user. In some situations, the administrator might prefer a different behavior. Pass the echo_verification_code option to the module in order to enable echoing.

If you want Number Lock turned on when Ubuntu starts (not before that on the GRUB menu, and not afterwards when logging in, and not just for specific virtual consoles), then install numlockx and make the initialization script /etc/rc.local use it to enable Number Lock:

sudo apt-get -y install numlockx sudo sed -i 's|^exit 0.*$|# Numlock enable\n[ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ] \&\& numlockx on\n\nexit 0|' /etc/rc.local
Another way:
#Ensure that numlockx is installed:sudoapt-getinstallnumlockx#Edit the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.confgksudogedit/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf#Add the following line to the file:greeter-setup-script=/usr/bin/numlockxon
